FURminator make deshedding tools built around a stainless steel edge designed to reach through a topcoat and pull out loose undercoat hair without cutting or damaging the coat itself. How the tool works
The edge is designed to catch loose, dead undercoat hair — the fluffy layer underneath the visible topcoat that sheds heavily in double-coated breeds — while leaving healthy topcoat hair in place. Used correctly, in the direction of hair growth and without pressing hard, it removes far more loose hair per session than a standard brush.
It's not a clipper or a trimmer, and it isn't meant to cut hair at all — it works by pulling out hair that's already loose and ready to shed, which is why regular short sessions tend to work better than one long one.
Choosing the right version
The long-hair and short-hair dog versions are matched to coat length rather than breed size, so check your dog's actual coat rather than assuming a small dog needs the small-animal tool. Double-coated breeds — the ones that blow their coat seasonally — tend to see the biggest difference from regular use.
The small animal version is a separate, differently sized tool built for rabbits and similar pets rather than a scaled-down dog tool, so it's worth choosing based on the animal it's actually intended for.
Getting the technique right
Work in the direction the coat grows, using light, even strokes rather than digging in or going over the same patch repeatedly in one session. On a matted or heavily tangled coat, a slicker brush or comb first makes the tool's job easier and more comfortable for your dog.
Brush over a towel or outdoors if you can, since a single session on a heavily shedding double coat can produce a genuinely surprising amount of loose hair. Regular shorter sessions through a shedding season keep the job manageable rather than letting it build up into one long, less pleasant grooming session.

- How often should I use a deshedding tool?
- Once or twice a week is a reasonable routine for most dogs, increasing to more frequent short sessions during a heavy seasonal shed. Regular shorter sessions tend to be more comfortable for your dog and more effective overall than one long session every few weeks.
- Will it hurt my dog to use one?
- Used correctly and without pressing hard against the skin, it shouldn't cause discomfort, since it's designed to catch loose hair rather than pull at hair still rooted in the follicle. Go gently over sensitive areas and stop if your dog seems uncomfortable at any point.
- Does it work on curly or wiry coats?
