Best brush for a Corgi
A Corgi's dense double coat sheds heavily, particularly during the seasonal blowouts in spring and autumn, so the right brush needs to reach through the harsher topcoat to the soft undercoat underneath rather than just skimming the surface. A good undercoat rake or deshedding tool tends to suit this breed better than a basic slicker brush alone.
Popular with owners of this breed: grooming brushes for dogs and dog herding balls.
Why a Corgi's coat needs a specific approach
Both Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis carry a double coat — a coarser, weather-resistant topcoat over a dense, soft undercoat that traps loose hair rather than letting it fall away on its own. A brush that only works the surface leaves the bulk of the loose undercoat in place, which is why Corgi owners often find regular brushing does not seem to reduce shedding much until they use a tool built to actually reach it.
Their low, long body shape also means it is worth being able to brush comfortably without needing your dog to stand awkwardly for a long session — a brush with a comfortable handle matters as much as the bristle or tooth design.
What kind of brush actually works
An undercoat rake, with rounded metal teeth spaced to reach through the topcoat, is generally the most effective tool for pulling out loose undercoat during a seasonal shed, and is worth using ahead of a slicker brush for finishing the topcoat rather than instead of one.
A slicker brush or grooming mitt is useful for regular maintenance between the heavier seasonal sheds, smoothing the topcoat and picking up looser surface hair, but it will not shift a heavy undercoat blow-out on its own the way a proper rake will.
How often to brush
Outside of the seasonal shed, a couple of sessions a week keeps a Corgi's coat in reasonable condition. During spring and autumn shedding, brushing more frequently — daily, if you can manage it — makes a real difference to how much hair ends up on the floor versus in the brush.
A metal comb is a useful final check after brushing, run gently through the coat to find any remaining loose undercoat or the beginnings of a mat before it tightens, particularly around the ears, armpits and hindquarters where a Corgi's coat tends to mat first. Catching a small tangle early with a comb is far easier than working one out once it has set in.

Common questions
- Do Corgis need professional grooming, or is brushing at home enough?
- Most Corgi owners manage coat care at home with regular brushing, particularly with the right undercoat tool during seasonal sheds. Professional grooming is not usually necessary for this breed's coat type in the way it might be for a breed that needs regular clipping or trimming.
- How often do Corgis shed heavily?
- Corgis typically have two more intense shedding periods a year, usually in spring and autumn, as they blow their undercoat in response to seasonal temperature change, on top of a lower level of shedding that continues year-round.
- Will a slicker brush alone deal with Corgi shedding?
- Not on its own during a heavy seasonal shed. A slicker brush is useful for surface maintenance, but an undercoat rake reaches the dense undercoat underneath far more effectively, and using both together tends to give the best result.
- Can bathing help with Corgi shedding?
- A bath with a shampoo suited to their coat can help loosen dead undercoat before brushing, making the brushing itself more effective, though it is not a substitute for regular brushing with the right tool during shedding season.
