Chihuahuas come in two distinct coat types — smooth and long — and they need genuinely different tools, so the first step in picking a brush is being clear which one your dog has. Smooth-coat Chihuahuas

Because the coat and the dog are both small, a stiff or firm brush is unnecessary and can be uncomfortable against the skin — gentleness matters more than a heavy-duty tool for this coat type.
Long-coat Chihuahuas
A long-coat Chihuahua has soft, flat or slightly wavy fur with feathering around the ears, chest, legs and tail, and that feathering is where mats tend to form if it isn't brushed through regularly. A slicker brush handles the body coat well, while a fine metal comb is better for working through feathering without pulling.
Brushing two or three times a week is usually enough for a long-coat Chihuahua kept as a pet, working in the direction of hair growth and paying particular attention to behind the ears and under the legs, where mats form first and are easiest to catch early.
General handling for such a small dog
Whatever the coat type, a Chihuahua's small size and sometimes nervous temperament means short, calm grooming sessions work better than one long session that stresses the dog. Building up tolerance gradually, with plenty of praise, makes brushing something the dog tolerates rather than dreads.
A firm but gentle hold matters more than a fancy brush technique with a dog this small — support their body properly rather than holding only by the collar or scruff, and stop before the dog becomes agitated rather than pushing through to finish a session.
