Yak and dairy chews are a hard, dried cheese made from yak or cow's milk rather than a meat product, prized for lasting far longer than most treats because of how dense and hard they are. What these chews actually are
Traditionally made in the Himalayas from yak and cow's milk, the cheese is dried and hardened into a chew that most dogs need real time and effort to work through, which is exactly why it has become popular as a long-lasting alternative to rawhide or a bully stick. Because it is a dairy product rather than a meat chew, it also suits dogs who cannot have certain meats but tolerate dairy well.
Yakers and Yak Snack both come in a range of sizes to match different dogs, and some, like the peanut butter variety, add a flavour coating to the plain cheese base, which can help with a dog who is not immediately drawn to the chew on its own.
Using them safely
These chews are genuinely hard, which is the whole point, but it also means they are not right for a dog with dental problems or very worn teeth, since a hard chew can be tough on a compromised mouth. As with any hard, long-lasting chew, supervise your dog with it, particularly a determined chewer who might try to bite off a large piece rather than working through it gradually.
Once a chew wears down to a small enough piece to swallow whole, many owners microwave it briefly to puff it up into a lighter, more digestible treat rather than letting a dog swallow the hard remnant — check the specific product's guidance on this before trying it yourself. As it is a dairy product, introduce it cautiously to a dog with a known dairy sensitivity.
