What plastic does not do

It is cover and decoration only: no nitrate uptake, no oxygenation, no help against algae — in fact it will grow algae on it, and cleaning it is a job you will be doing rather than one the plant does for you. Supa publish no base dimensions, no colour and no species it imitates, so what arrives is whichever moulding is current on the 8" line. Leaf stiffness is not stated either, and that is the one thing worth checking yourself before it goes in with long-finned fish such as bettas or fancy guppies.

Every new tank goes through a stage where the fish are settling in nicely and the plants are dissolving. Live planting is a separate hobby bolted onto the first one, with its own lighting, substrate and patience requirement — and not everyone signed up for that when they bought a tank.

This is the shortcut. An 8" plastic plant, moulded from materials Supa say are chosen so it stays long lasting, odour free and does not fade. Because it is plastic it produces no oxygen and no carbon dioxide, which means it cannot shift the water chemistry or the pH in either direction — and it cannot bring in the pests or diseases that arrive with live plants from another tank.

No. Supa point out that plastic plants produce no oxygen or carbon dioxide, so they do not affect water chemistry or pH levels.

What colour will it be?

Does it need cleaning?

Algae will grow on plastic the same as on anything else in a lit tank. Supa say the material is long lasting, odour free and does not fade, but it is still a surface you will be wiping down.
