This is Lily's Kitchen's pate range bought as a box rather than a tray at a time: thirty two 85g trays split evenly across four recipes, Chicken, Lamb, Turkey with Duck, and Chicken with Game. All four are smooth pate rather than chunks, which is the texture most older cats and most fussy cats will actually finish, and all four are complete food for adult cats.

What separates it from the tins next to it is that the compositions name their meat and give a percentage. Chicken is chicken at 65% and minerals, and nothing else. Turkey with Duck is turkey 60% and duck 5%. Chicken with Game is chicken 37%, pork 23% and venison 4%. Lamb is lamb 26%, chicken 26% and pork 12%. There is no cereal, no thickener and no added sugar in any of them, and the only additives are taurine at 804mg/kg, which every cat food needs, plus chelated zinc, manganese and iodine. The panels land at Crude Protein 9.5% and Crude Fat 6% across all four, at 81 to 82% moisture, and 85 to 88 kcal per 100g.

A 32 tray box is about a fortnight for one cat, not a month. The brand's own feeding guide puts a 3 to 4kg cat on 140 to 170g a day, which is two trays, and a 5 to 6kg cat on 200 to 225g, which is closer to two and a half. Multiply that out before you decide whether this is your cat's whole diet or the wet half of it, because plenty of people run it alongside a dry food for exactly that reason and that is a perfectly sensible way to buy it. Worth knowing too that the recipes are made in a factory that handles grains, so a trace is possible even though the recipes themselves are grain free.

Who it's for: An adult cat who prefers a smooth texture over chunks, and an owner who wants to be able to read the percentage of the animal on the label. It is also the sensible way to buy Lily's Kitchen pate if your cat already eats it, since the box works out better per tray than singles. Which four recipes are in the box?

Eight trays each of Smooth Pate Chicken, Smooth Pate Lamb, Smooth Pate Turkey with Duck, and Smooth Pate Chicken with Game, all for adult cats. Three of the four contain chicken in some form, so it is not the box for a cat avoiding poultry.

How long will 32 trays last?

Roughly a fortnight for one average adult cat fed on wet food alone. The feeding guide is 140 to 170g a day for a 3 to 4kg cat, which is two 85g trays, and 200 to 225g for a 5 to 6kg cat.

Is 9.5% protein low for a cat?

No, it is a wet food at 81 to 82% moisture, so nearly all the weight is water and every percentage scales down with it. Compare it against other wet foods, or against the calorie figure of 85 to 88 kcal per 100g, rather than against a dry food.

Is it really grain free?

The recipes are, and the compositions bear that out, since the longest ingredient list in the box is three meats and minerals. The brand does add that it is made in a factory that handles grains, so traces may be present. If your cat has a diagnosed grain issue rather than a preference, that distinction matters.

Can kittens or older cats eat it?

It is formulated as a complete food for adult cats. Lily's Kitchen make separate 32 tray boxes for kittens and for mature cats, so a growing kitten or a cat the brand considers senior is better served by those than by this one.

Why is it so much more than a tin of cat food?

Because of what the composition says. A value tin declares meat and animal derivatives with no species and often a minimum of four percent of the named meat; this declares chicken at 65%.
