A rabbit does not walk like a dog. It goes in bursts, stops dead, thinks about it, and then reverses - and reversing is exactly how most small animals get out of a harness. Anything built as two straps and a buckle is working against an animal shaped like a wedge and covered in loose skin.

This takes the other approach: a soft nylon mesh vest that goes all the way round the body, so a pull on the lead is spread across the whole vest rather than digging in under the front and hind legs. The lead that comes with it is stretchy, which takes the snap out of a sudden bolt, and there is a finder bell fitted on the vest itself. Small 'N' Furry list it for rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats and small animals, and the mesh is described as easy to clean.

• Soft nylon mesh vest rather than a strap harness
• Stretchy lead included
• Finder bell fitted to the vest
• Spreads pressure instead of pulling under the legs
• Listed for rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats and small animals
• Easy to clean

On fit, which is the whole risk here. No chest or girth measurement reaches us at all - only a size letter - so you are choosing on a label rather than on a number, and a small animal that can back out of a harness will do it the first time something frightens them. Treat this as kit for supervised time on grass in a garden you control, never for a walk down a street. Prey animals bolt without warning, and a stretchy lead gives them the run-up to do it.

Who it's for: rabbit, guinea pig and ferret owners who want their animal out on the grass with them for an hour, close by, rather than loose in a garden with gaps in the fence.
