Salmon-led cat foods often lean on the fish-lover reputation and skip past what else is actually in the bag, so it's worth checking the wheat and soya sitting behind the headline ingredient.

Salmon, described as including head, bone and meat, leads this recipe at 17%, closely followed by wheat at 16% and soya meal further down the list. Purina add a specific Lactobacillus strain, branded Bifensis, at 0.025% — the same addition used across this range.

• Protein 34%, fat 14%, crude ash 7.5%, fibre 2.5%
• Wheat present at 16%, plus wheat gluten — not grain free
• Contains added Lactobacillus (Bifensis) at 0.025%

On what 'salmon' includes. The salmon content is described as including head, bone and meat rather than fillet alone, and it sits at 17% against 16% wheat — closer to an even split between the two than the name on the front might suggest.

Who it's for: owners of an adult cat who want a salmon-led dry food with an added probiotic strain, understanding it isn't a grain-free recipe.
