Eight panels give you more shapes than most pens manage — hexagon, pentagon, square or triangle — which matters when the space you are trying to fill is a bay window, an awkward corner or a stretch of lawn rather than an open floor. Each panel is 58cm wide and they connect on both sides, so the arrangement is genuinely up to you.

The metal is powder-coated rather than bare, which is the difference between a pen that lives outdoors happily and one that starts marking a patio with rust after a wet autumn. Wire gauge is 2.5mm horizontal and 2.2mm vertical, and the step-through door has a latch, so you walk in rather than lifting a panel every time. Six ground stakes come in the box for use on grass.

Realistic about height. 60cm is a boundary for small and young animals. A rabbit can clear it from standing if it decides to, and so can a fit small dog — this is for supervised time, not for leaving an animal outdoors unattended, where it also offers no protection from a fox.
