A cat that has crept up in weight is usually still hungry at the same times of day, so the easier fix is a food built to be filling at a lower calorie cost rather than simply feeding less of the ordinary food and leaving the cat wanting more.

This is Purina ONE Light, a complete dry food built around chicken (15%) alongside wheat, dried poultry protein, corn, wheat gluten, soya meal and dried chicory root as a prebiotic source. Protein sits at 37%, with fat at 9.5% — lower than a standard adult recipe — plus crude ash 7.5%, crude fibre 6.0%, omega-3 at 0.1% and omega-6 at 2.0%, delivering 327.5 kcal per 100g.

• Complete dry food, 750g bag
• Protein 37%, fat content 9.5%
• Crude ash 7.5%, crude fibre 6.0%
• Chicken (15%) is the named protein; wheat and corn also feature
• Omega-3 0.1%, omega-6 2.0%
• Purina's feeding guide runs from 45g/day at 4-6kg up to 115g/day at 8-10kg

What the label does not say. This is a wheat-based recipe, not grain-free, so it is not the right choice if grain is something you are specifically avoiding. Purina's feeding guide is a starting point to be adjusted for your own cat's activity and body condition, not a fixed number.

Who it's for: owners of a cat that has put on weight, or is prone to, who want a complete food built for that rather than simply cutting portions of a standard recipe.
