Salmon is the one to reach for when a dog needs fish oil in its diet and you would rather it came from the food than from a bottle. Half the recipe is salmon, and unusually for this range the fat level is the lowest of the adult recipes.

The 50% salmon is Salmon (28%), Dried Salmon (17%), Salmon Oil (3%) and Salmon Stock (2%), on brown rice, barley and oats. The panel reads Crude Protein 25%, Crude Fat 9%, Crude Fibre 3%, Crude Ash 7.5%. Omega 3 is declared at 1.4%, the highest of the rice recipes in the range, and it carries slightly more joint support than its siblings at Glucosamine 175mg/kg, MSM 175mg/kg and Chlondroitin Sulphate 130mg/kg.

There is a figure on the manufacturer's own page for this recipe that we do not believe. They print Phosphorus as .09%, which against Calcium 1.5% would be a ratio no complete food carries. A stockist transcribing the same bag prints 0.9%, which fits. We have quoted the brand's number above because that is what they publish, but if you are comparing panels for a dog with a kidney or mineral concern, read the printed bag and do not take .09% at face value. Everything else in the panel is ordinary and consistent across sources.

Common questions

Why is the fat lower than the other recipes?

It just is. This one is Crude Fat 9% where the chicken is 15% and the lamb 13%, while protein stays up at 25%. That makes it the useful one for a dog that needs condition without excess energy.

What is wrong with the phosphorus figure?

The brand's own page prints .09%, and a stockist transcribing the same bag prints 0.9%. Against a calcium level of 1.5% the second is the plausible one. We have flagged it rather than quietly correcting it. Read the bag if the number matters to you.

Is it a complete food?

Yes. It is described as a hypoallergenic, wheat gluten free natural complete dogfood for all breeds of working dogs.

How much do I feed?

The bag gives grams per day by the dog's bodyweight: 35 to 115g for a 1 to 5kg dog, 115 to 195g at 5 to 10kg, 195 to 325g at 10 to 20kg, 325 to 445g at 20 to 30kg, 445 to 550g at 30 to 40kg, and 550g and up over 40kg. The brand prints its own caveat alongside it and it is worth taking seriously: breed, exercise level, neutered status and even how warm the house is all move the number, so start there and adjust to the dog in front of you.

Is this the same as the fish and potato recipe?

No. This is salmon on brown rice. The fish recipe in the same range is grain free, built on potato and sweet potato, and contains trout and blended fish as well as salmon.
