Product description

Garlic tablets, a long-standing fixture of the British pet shelf and one of the few products in it that owners have genuinely strong opinions about in both directions. Johnson's make a modest claim: a natural herbal conditioner and internal cleanser for dogs and cats.

The composition is garlic. Johnson's declare nothing else, give no quantity of garlic per tablet, and make no claim beyond conditioner and internal cleanser. Notably, they do not claim it repels fleas, which is the reason a lot of people reach for garlic tablets in the first place. The tablets come in two pack sizes, a small carton and a large one, and the larger is a genuinely long-running supply for one animal.

* Composition: garlic * For dogs and cats * Described as a natural herbal conditioner and internal cleanser * No flea or parasite claim is made * Sold in 40 and 200 tablet packs

Garlic is the most argued-about ingredient in this aisle, and the pack gives you nothing to argue with. Garlic belongs to the same plant family as onion, and the amount an animal can safely have is a question of dose and species and size, which is precisely what Johnson's do not publish: there is no milligram figure per tablet and no feeding quantity on their page. We are not going to invent one. If your dog or cat has any existing health condition, is on medication, or is a breed with known red cell sensitivities, ask your vet before starting this rather than after.

Who it's for: Owners who already use garlic tablets and want a plain single-ingredient one from a long-established UK brand, and who are taking the quantity question to a vet rather than to a forum.

Why we chose it

We stock the plain single-ingredient version rather than one of the garlic-and-seaweed-and-eight-other-things blends, because if you have decided to give garlic you should be able to see that garlic is what you are giving. We have also written the caveat into the page rather than leaving it for the reviews.

Common questions

What is in the tablet?

Garlic. Johnson's declare nothing else and give no quantity per tablet.

Will it keep fleas off my dog?

The carton says the tablets “have been used as a traditional repellent against flea and worm infestation”. That is a statement about traditional use, not a claim that it works, and no efficacy data is offered. Treat it as a conditioner that carries a folk reputation. It is not a flea or worm treatment and must not be used in place of one.

How many tablets a day?

Johnson's publish no feeding quantity on their site. The pack is where that will be, and a vet is the right person to ask, particularly for a cat or a small dog.

Isn't garlic bad for dogs and cats?

It is in the same family as onion and the answer turns entirely on dose, species and body size. The pack gives no milligram figure, so we cannot tell you where this product sits on that. It is a fair question to put to a vet before you start.

What pack sizes are there?

40 tablets and 200 tablets.

How long does delivery take?

Your estimated delivery date is shown above and updates automatically. UK orders are sent tracked — standard delivery is £2.99, and free on orders over £39.

How do I track my order?

As soon as your order is dispatched we email you a tracking link, so you can follow it all the way to your door.

What if I need to return my order?

You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind (food, treats and frozen items have a shorter window). Just email us with your order number and we’ll send the return steps the same working day — see our delivery & returns page for details.
