Product description

Evening primrose oil in capsule form, aimed at coat and skin rather than joints, which is what separates it from the cod liver oil sitting next to it on the same shelf. Johnson's set a minimum age on it, which most supplement packs do not bother with.

The composition is evening primrose oil. Johnson's describe it as a natural dietary supplement rich in essential fatty acids, and say it helps support a healthy coat and skin condition and alleviate dry and irritated skin and scurf. They set it for cats and dogs over twelve weeks of age. The pack holds 60 capsules, and their own listing carries a New Improved tag, so the formulation has been changed at some point from whatever preceded it.

* Composition: evening primrose oil * For cats and dogs over twelve weeks of age * Aimed at dry, irritated skin and scurf * 60 capsules * A complementary supplement, not a food

Rich in essential fatty acids is a claim with no number behind it. The active part of evening primrose oil is generally taken to be its gamma linolenic acid, and Johnson's publish no figure for it, no figure for total fatty acids and no analytical panel of any kind. That means you cannot compare this capsule with any other EPO product on content, only on capsule count and price. Skin that is dry, irritated and scurfy is also a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and it is worth finding out what is causing it before deciding an oil is the answer.

Who it's for: Cat and dog owners past the twelve week mark who have already ruled out the obvious causes of a poor coat and want to try a single-ingredient oil rather than a blend.

Why we chose it

We wanted a single-oil option on the shelf next to the cod liver oil, because the two are aimed at different things and blending them into one tub is how most brands avoid telling you how much of either you are getting. The twelve week age limit on the pack also told us somebody had thought about it.

Common questions

What is in it?

Evening primrose oil. Johnson's declare no other ingredient.

How much GLA does a capsule contain?

Johnson's do not say. They describe the capsules as rich in essential fatty acids and publish no figure for GLA or for total fatty acids.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes. Johnson's specify cats and dogs over twelve weeks of age.

How long before I see a difference in the coat?

Johnson's give no timeframe. Coat turnover is slow in any animal, so this is not a product that reports back quickly, and a coat that is poor for a medical reason will not respond to an oil at all.

How many capsules in a pack?

60.

How long does delivery take?

Your estimated delivery date is shown above and updates automatically. UK orders are sent tracked — standard delivery is £2.99, and free on orders over £39.

How do I track my order?

As soon as your order is dispatched we email you a tracking link, so you can follow it all the way to your door.

What if I need to return my order?

You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind (food, treats and frozen items have a shorter window). Just email us with your order number and we’ll send the return steps the same working day — see our delivery & returns page for details.
