Most ear products on the shelf lean on alcohol or fragrance to feel like they're working, which is exactly the wrong approach for an ear canal that's already sensitive — the sting is not a sign of effectiveness, it's just a sting.

This one is built differently: an antibacterial hypochlorous solution that Johnson's describe as alcohol free, pH balanced, with no preservatives, perfume or fragrances added. They describe it as hypoallergenic, antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, and say it aids the removal of earwax, debris and other contaminants from a pet's ears. It's for dogs, cats and small pets, and comes in 50ml recyclable cardboard and glass packaging.

On properties, not a diagnosis. "Antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal" describes the solution's general properties as stated by Johnson's — it isn't a diagnosis, and Johnson's give no guidance on how often to use it or how much per ear. An ear that's red, smelly, painful or clearly infected needs a vet rather than more drops.

Who it's for: owners who want a fragrance-free, alcohol-free option for routine ear care, particularly for a pet with sensitive ears or skin.
