A food-grade salmon oil from sustainably sourced North Atlantic salmon, extracted cold rather than with heat or solvent. It is poured or pumped straight onto the food, which makes it the easiest supplement in the house to give and the easiest one to overdo.

Johnson's are specific about the process and vague about the result. The cold-pressed method, they say, quickly extracts fresh natural oil and safeguards the naturally occurring fatty acids, ensuring high levels of DHA, EPA, Omega 3 and Omega 6. They name all four and quantify none of them. The oil carries no chemical additives, which is the only additives statement anywhere in the Johnson's range. The 500ml comes with a pump dispenser; there is also a 250ml.

High levels of DHA and EPA, with no figure for either, cannot be compared with an oil that publishes one. The whole argument for a marine oil over a plant oil is its long chain fatty acid content, and that argument only means anything as a number. Johnson's give none, here or anywhere in their range. Separately, fish oil goes rancid: light, warmth and air are what do it, so the pump is doing real work and a bottle kept on a sunny windowsill for six months is not the product you bought.

Who it's for: Dog and cat owners who want a plain salmon oil to pour over food, and who are choosing on process and freshness rather than on a fatty acid figure, because there is not one to choose on.
