Buying cat food by the kilogram rather than the bag is one of the few genuinely boring ways to save money, and it only works if you already know the recipe agrees with your cat, otherwise a bigger bag is just a bigger gamble.

This is James Wellbeloved's chicken recipe in a 4kg bag, built around chicken as the single named protein at 27.5% dried chicken protein, with brown and white rice for carbohydrate instead of wheat. It is formulated to exclude beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat, the brand's usual hypoallergenic approach.

• Composition: dried chicken protein (27.5%), brown rice (21%), white rice (16.8%)
• Protein 31.8%, fat 17.0%, crude ash 7.5%, crude fibre 1.7%
• Omega-3 0.40%, omega-6 4.0%, energy 402 kcal/100g
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• 4kg bag

One thing worth knowing. This is the same recipe, the same chicken percentage, the same protein and fat figures, as this brand's smaller Chicken-labelled bag also sold in our shop. The "& Rice" in this name is not a different recipe, it is the bigger bag. Buy this size only if you get through food fast enough to use it up before it has been open too long. No feeding guide has been supplied to us for this recipe; that table is on the bag.

Who it's for: a household with more than one cat already on this recipe, or an owner confident enough in it to buy the bigger bag rather than working through smaller ones first.
