Filter media only works if it fits the chamber it sits in — a pad that is slightly the wrong shape leaves gaps for water to bypass the foam altogether, which defeats the point of mechanical filtration before the water has been filtered at all.

This pad is custom-made for the Fluval U1 underwater filter, sized to fit that specific filter's chamber and stop debris bypassing the media. It forms the mechanical stage of filtration — the first stage, catching larger particles and debris before finer biological filtration happens further along — with a pore size intended to balance water flow against clogging. Fluval list it as suitable for freshwater, marine or reptile setups.

• Custom-made to fit the Fluval U1 underwater filter
• First-stage mechanical filtration: captures larger particles and debris
• Designed to fit the filter chamber snugly, reducing bypass
• Pore size intended to balance flow with filtration life
• Suitable for freshwater, marine or reptile environments

On compatibility. This pad is shaped for the Fluval U1 specifically — Fluval do not describe it as fitting other Fluval filters or other manufacturers' units, so check your filter model before ordering rather than assuming a foam pad will fit any similarly sized chamber.

Who it's for: Fluval U1 filter owners due a media change, who want mechanical filtration matched to that specific unit rather than a generic cut-to-fit foam block.
