Neutering & Vaccinations: A UK Owner's Guide
A plain-English UK guide to the health admin every owner has to handle — neutering, vaccinations, boosters and the law on microchipping — so you know what's due, when, and roughly what it costs.

Hi, I'm Matt, founder of Giddy Pets. When you bring home a new dog or cat, a chunk of the early months is taken up with health admin — the jabs, the neutering decision, the microchip, the boosters that keep ticking over for years afterwards. It's the unglamorous side of pet ownership, but it's also where a bit of planning saves you money, stress and the odd nasty surprise. This hub pulls it all together in plain English so you know what's due, roughly when, and what to expect.
This is general guidance, not a substitute for veterinary advice — always check with your own vet, who knows your pet.
What this hub covers
We've split the big questions into clear, jargon-free guides. On the neutering side, see spaying a dog, neutering a dog and, for cats, when to neuter a cat. On vaccinations, start with puppy vaccinations or kitten vaccinations for your new arrival, then dog booster vaccinations for keeping adult dogs protected. For the money side, dog vaccinations cost sets out what's typically involved. And because it's the law, microchipping a dog explains the rules for both dogs and cats.
A quick word on the law
Microchipping isn't optional in the UK. Dogs must be microchipped by law, and from June 2024 cats must be too. The other items here — neutering, vaccinations and boosters — aren't legally required, but they're strongly recommended by every major UK welfare charity and are usually required by boarding kennels, catteries and many insurers. Our microchipping a dog guide covers exactly what the law says.
How to use this hub
None of these guides replace your vet's advice — they're here so you walk into appointments informed and confident. A good habit is to keep one place for all your pet's health dates. Our vaccine reminder nudges you when boosters are due, and the pet medicine calendar keeps flea, worm and medication dates in one spot. New puppy owners often ask when it's safe to head out — when can a puppy go outside after vaccination answers that one.
Planning the cost
The first year is the priciest, with the vaccination course, neutering and microchipping all landing close together. Exact prices vary a lot by vet and region, so use our puppy cost calculator to map out the year ahead, and the pet emergency cost calculator plus our pet insurance guide to plan for the unexpected. If you're not yet registered with a practice, the vets directory can help you find one nearby.
After neutering
Neutering is routine, but your pet will need a little recovery care — a quiet space, lead-only walks for a dog, and something to stop them licking the wound. You'll find recovery cones and soft post-op comfort items in our shop. New here? Our puppy and kitten hubs walk you through everything else those first months bring.
