How big will my German Shepherd get?
A male German Shepherd typically reaches somewhere between 30 and 40kg as a fully grown adult, with females usually settling lighter, in the region of 22 to 32kg. Working out where your own puppy is likely to land within that range comes down to a mix of their current growth stage, their parents' size and how the breed's growth pattern generally plays out, rather than any single number you can read off at a young age.
Popular with German Shepherd owners: herding balls for collies and sheepdogs, brushes and combs for dogs and dog puzzle toys.
Why a single early weight doesn't predict much on its own
A German Shepherd puppy's weight at eight or twelve weeks says relatively little about their eventual adult size on its own, since growth rate varies a lot between individual puppies even within the same litter. A vet plotting weight against a recognised growth curve over several visits gives a far more reliable picture than one figure taken in isolation.
Looking at the size of a puppy's parents, where you have that information, tends to be a more useful early indicator than the puppy's own weight at a young age, since size is significantly inherited, though not perfectly predictable even then.
How growth typically progresses
Most of a German Shepherd's height is reached by around twelve months, but the breed keeps filling out with muscle and body depth for considerably longer, often not looking fully mature until somewhere between eighteen months and two and a half years old.
Working-line German Shepherds, bred more for athleticism and job performance, and show-line dogs, bred closer to the breed standard's proportions, can differ noticeably in build even at the same adult weight, which is worth knowing if you are trying to judge your own puppy against photos or descriptions of the breed generally.
Common questions
- How much should a male German Shepherd weigh as an adult?
- Most males settle somewhere between 30 and 40kg fully grown, though build and lineage cause real variation. Your vet can tell you whether your particular dog's weight looks healthy for their frame.
- How much should a female German Shepherd weigh as an adult?
- Females typically weigh less than males, usually in the region of 22 to 32kg. As with males, this is a general range rather than an exact figure every dog will match.
- Can I predict my German Shepherd's adult size from their paws?
- Paw size is sometimes used as a rough, informal indicator that a puppy may grow into a larger frame, but it is not a reliable measurement on its own. A vet tracking weight against a growth curve over several visits gives a much better picture.
