German Shepherd weight chart

A healthy adult German Shepherd typically weighs somewhere around 30 to 40kg for males and 22 to 32kg for females, though the breed standard allows a wide range and an individual dog's healthy weight depends on their frame, build and how they were raised as a puppy far more than a single figure on a chart.

Reading a weight chart the right way

Any breed weight chart is a general guide built from averages, not a target for your specific dog. Two German Shepherds from different working lines or show lines can have quite different healthy frames, and a chart cannot see either of them.

The number that matters more day to day is body condition rather than the scale reading: whether you can feel your dog's ribs easily under a light covering of fat, whether they have a visible waist from above, and whether they tuck up behind the ribcage from the side. A vet check at a routine visit is a far more reliable read on this than comparing your dog to a chart.

How a German Shepherd's weight changes with age

Puppies grow quickly through their first year and typically reach most of their adult height by around twelve months, though many continue filling out in muscle and frame for several months after that, with full maturity often not reached until eighteen months to two years.

This is a large breed with a genuine risk of joint problems if growth happens too fast, which is one of the main reasons large-breed puppy foods exist — they are formulated to support a steadier rate of growth rather than the fastest possible one.

When weight is worth raising with your vet

A sudden, unexplained change in weight in either direction, a dog that seems to be struggling to keep weight on, or one that has clearly become overweight are all worth a conversation with your vet rather than something to manage from a chart alone.

Your vet can weigh your dog accurately, assess their body condition properly, and tell you whether their weight is appropriate for their individual frame — which is always a better answer than any general chart can give.

Common questions

What is a healthy weight for a German Shepherd?
Typically around 30 to 40kg for adult males and 22 to 32kg for adult females, though this varies with frame size and build. Body condition — whether you can feel the ribs and see a waist — is a better day-to-day guide than the number alone.
At what age is a German Shepherd fully grown?
Most reach close to their adult height by around twelve months, but continue filling out in muscle and frame until roughly eighteen months to two years. Large breeds mature more slowly than small ones, so patience matters here.
Why is my German Shepherd puppy growing so fast?
Rapid early growth is normal for a large breed, but growing too quickly can put strain on developing joints. A large-breed puppy food is formulated to support steadier growth, and your vet can advise if you are concerned about the pace.
Should I be worried if my German Shepherd is underweight?
A dog that looks thin, has very prominent ribs or spine, or has lost weight without an obvious reason is worth a vet visit. There are several possible causes, and a vet is the right person to work out which applies to your dog.
