Australian Shepherd weight chart: how to read one

Australian Shepherd males typically settle somewhere around 25 to 32kg as adults, with females usually a little lighter at around 16 to 25kg. As with any breed chart, the number for any one visit matters less than the trend across several checks and how your dog actually feels under the coat.

How growth typically progresses

This medium-large herding breed puts on most of its size steadily through the first year, with growth slowing from around eight or nine months onward, and muscle tone continuing to fill out into the second year given how physically demanding their working background is.

Because Australian Shepherds carry a fair amount of muscle for their frame, two dogs of the same height can have quite different healthy weights depending on build, which is part of why a chart works better as a general guide than an exact target.

Reading the numbers properly

Weigh at consistent intervals through the growing months and watch the direction of travel rather than any single reading — a dog tracking a steady curve broadly similar to the chart is doing well, even sitting a little above or below the average figures.

Body condition scoring matters alongside weight for this breed specifically, since muscle is dense and can make a lean, well-conditioned dog weigh more than expected for their frame. Feeling the ribs and checking for a waist tuck-in from above gives a more honest picture than the scale alone.

When to get a vet's view

A growth rate that suddenly speeds up, slows right down, or plateaus much earlier than expected is worth flagging at a check-up rather than waiting to see. This is especially true for an active, working-type breed where changes in condition can also reflect changes in exercise or health.

A chart gives a useful benchmark, but a vet examining your dog directly is in a much better position to judge whether growth and weight are on track for that individual animal.

Common questions

What is a healthy adult weight for an Australian Shepherd?
Roughly 25 to 32kg for males and 16 to 25kg for females, though healthy dogs can sit outside that range given differences in build. Body condition matters as much as the number on the scale.
When do Australian Shepherds stop growing?
Most reach close to adult height and weight by around 12 months, with muscle continuing to develop into their second year given how physically active the breed typically is.
Why does my Australian Shepherd weigh more than the chart suggests?
This breed carries a fair amount of dense muscle for its frame, which can make a lean, well-conditioned dog weigh more than a chart average suggests. Body condition, not just weight, is the better measure.
How often should I weigh a growing Australian Shepherd?
Roughly monthly during the first year gives a useful trend to follow. What matters most is the direction of change over several checks, rather than any single reading on its own.
