Dog Balls
A good ball is large enough not to swallow and built for the game the dog actually plays. Choose clean bounce for fetch, a rope handle for distance, a fillable centre for food play or tougher rubber for a dog that mouths every retrieve.

Why we picked it
The deciding feature on BIONIC Ball Large is ball shape, supported by bionic rubber. That gives this toy or accessory a concrete role without leaning on unverified durability or health claims.

Best ball and rope combination
Bestpets Ball & Rope
Why we picked it
The treat hole gives this more staying power on a rainy day when fetch isn't practical, and the rope handle means it still works as a proper throwing toy the rest of the time. Two functions for one low price is a decent trade.

Choose a dog ball by the game
| Game | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast fetch | Visible, high-bounce rubber ball | Predictable size with an uneven bounce keeps the chase interesting. |
| Long throws | Ball with a rope or launcher-compatible shape | The handle adds distance without needing a tiny ball. |
| Quiet indoor enrichment | Treat-dispensing ball | Food turns rolling and nudging into a longer solo task. |
| Water play | Floating, high-visibility ball | It stays recoverable and is easier to see against water. |
The ball must be wider than the back teeth
A fetch ball should not pass behind the dog’s molars. When a dog falls between sizes, choose the larger ball and check the manufacturer’s weight or breed guidance.
Replace a ball that is split, deeply punctured or shedding pieces. A toy that was the right size can become swallowable once a large section breaks away.
Fetch needs pauses
Repeated sprinting, turning and hard braking is demanding exercise. Use shorter sets, throw along the ground rather than high into the air and give the dog time to sniff between rounds.
Ordinary abrasive tennis-ball felt can wear teeth when it becomes packed with grit. A dog-specific ball or smooth rubber is the better everyday choice for a dog that carries the ball constantly.
Material changes how the ball behaves
Natural or flexible rubber gives a useful balance of bounce and tooth-friendly give for many dogs. Foam is light for gentle indoor play, while a rope attachment makes a larger ball easier to throw and retrieve without choosing a dangerously small diameter.
Very hard or brittle balls can damage teeth, and soft hollow balls can collapse under a powerful bite. The safest choice is not the toughest label; it is the right size and material for that dog’s mouth and play style.
Treat-dispensing balls need a cleaning routine
Count kibble or treats used inside a ball within the dog’s daily allowance. Start with an easy fill so the dog learns how it works, then make the task harder only while it remains enjoyable rather than frustrating.
Wash food toys after every use and check holes and seams for trapped residue. Retire any ball that smells stale after cleaning or has damage deep enough to hide food.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
What size ball is safe for my dog?
Choose one too large to pass behind the back teeth. If uncertain, size up and follow the maker’s dog-size guidance.
Can a dog chew a ball unsupervised?
Only when the product is specifically designed for that use and remains intact. Fetch balls should normally be put away after the game.
Are tennis balls bad for dogs’ teeth?
Constant chewing on dirty abrasive felt can wear enamel. Dog-specific felt or smooth rubber is a safer regular option.
