Why the raw rice myth isn't true

How to serve it
Both cooked and raw rice are fine to scatter for chickens to peck at, and cooked rice, cooled to room temperature, is a little softer and easier for them to manage. Plain rice, with nothing added, is the only version worth offering. Either way, scatter it across a wide area rather than piling it in one spot, which spreads out the pecking and cuts down on squabbling within the flock.

Keeping it a genuine extra
A small handful shared among a flock, a couple of times a week, is a sensible amount. Rice, like any treat, has far less nutritional value than a proper layer feed and should never make up a meaningful part of a hen's daily diet.
Scattering rice or other treats in the run also gives chickens something to search for, which is a reasonable bit of enrichment alongside the treat itself, as long as it stays a small addition rather than a substitute for their feed.
Grit helps them process it
Chickens do not chew, so anything they eat, rice included, is ground down inside the gizzard with the help of grit — small stones, or a purpose-bought supplement, that a hen deliberately swallows. A flock with regular access to grit generally processes treats like rice without any trouble.
This is also part of why the raw rice myth does not hold up to any real scrutiny: a chicken's digestive system is built to break down whole grains mechanically, rather than relying on the food itself to soften first, which is exactly what happens with rice whether it arrives cooked or raw.
Feed comes first
