Can chickens eat pepperoni?

No, pepperoni is not a suitable food for chickens. It is a heavily processed, cured meat that is very high in salt and fat and typically seasoned with spices such as chilli and garlic, none of which suit a chicken's digestive system, and it offers nothing that a chicken actually needs from its diet.

Why pepperoni is a poor choice for chickens

Chickens are omnivores and can eat small amounts of plain cooked meat, but pepperoni is a different category of food entirely — it is cured with large amounts of salt as a preservation method, and salt in the quantities found in processed meats can cause serious problems for a bird as small as a chicken.

The fat content is also unsuitable for regular feeding, since chickens do not need or process high-fat processed food well, and the spices commonly used in pepperoni, including chilli and often garlic or onion powder, are additional ingredients that have no place in a chicken's diet.

What happens if a chicken eats a small piece by accident

A single small accidental piece is unlikely to cause a lasting problem in an otherwise healthy adult chicken, but it is not something to offer intentionally or repeatedly. Watch for reduced activity, reluctance to eat or drink, or any change in droppings over the following day if a chicken has had a meaningful amount.

If a chicken has eaten a significant quantity of pepperoni or any other heavily salted processed meat, or seems unwell afterwards, contact a vet experienced with poultry rather than waiting to see if it passes, since salt poisoning can become serious quickly in a small bird.

What to feed instead

A chicken's diet should be built around a proper layer or poultry feed formulated for their nutritional needs, with occasional plain vegetables, fruit or small amounts of plain cooked meat as treats rather than processed foods made for people. Mealworms and a poultry-specific treat mix are popular options that chicken keepers use for variety and enrichment without the risks that come with cured meat.

Keeping treats to a small proportion of a chicken's overall diet, alongside a good-quality feed as the main food source, does more for a flock's health than any single treat choice ever will.

Why 'chickens will eat almost anything' is misleading

Chickens are genuinely opportunistic eaters and will peck at a huge range of things out of curiosity, which leads some keepers to assume that whatever a chicken eats must be fine for it. Willingness to eat something is not the same as it being suitable, and processed foods made for people, pepperoni included, sit well outside what a chicken's diet is built to handle regularly.

This matters more for a small flock kept as pets than it might seem, since a few keepers sharing table scraps regularly can add up to a meaningful part of a chicken's diet over time without anyone intending that to happen. Treating table scraps as an occasional, carefully chosen extra rather than a routine habit keeps a flock's overall diet on track.

Common questions

Can chickens eat any cured or processed meat?
It's best avoided altogether. Cured and processed meats like pepperoni, ham and bacon are high in salt, fat and often contain seasonings unsuitable for poultry, and none of them offer anything a chicken's diet actually needs.
Is salt dangerous for chickens?
Yes, chickens are sensitive to high salt intake, and the amount found in processed meats like pepperoni is well beyond what suits a bird their size. Persistent access to salty food can lead to serious illness.
What treats are safe for chickens?
Plain vegetables, small amounts of fruit, mealworms and treat mixes made specifically for poultry are all safer options. These should still only make up a small part of the diet, with a proper layer feed as the main food source.
My chicken ate a piece of pepperoni that fell on the ground — should I worry?
A single small accidental piece is unlikely to cause lasting harm to an otherwise healthy adult chicken, but watch for any change in behaviour, appetite or droppings over the next day, and contact a vet experienced with poultry if anything seems off.
Can chickens eat plain cooked sausage or ham instead of pepperoni?
These are better avoided too, for similar reasons — most sausages and ham are also cured or heavily seasoned and salted. A small amount of plain, unseasoned cooked chicken or fish is a safer choice for an occasional protein treat.
