Can chickens eat courgette?
Yes, chickens can eat courgette. It is not toxic, most hens take to it readily, and it can be offered raw or cooked, whole or sliced, as an occasional addition to their diet. The main things to get right are keeping it to a treat rather than a meal replacement, and never offering anything mouldy or starting to rot.
Why courgette is fine for chickens
Courgette is mostly water with a little fibre and some vitamins, and nothing in the flesh or skin is toxic to hens. Many keepers offer it in warm weather as a way of getting a little extra moisture into the diet, alongside their normal feed rather than in place of it.
It does not carry the nutritional density chickens get from a proper layer feed, so it should never make up a large part of what a hen eats in a day. Treats of any kind, courgette included, are generally kept to around ten per cent of the overall diet so the balanced feed still does most of the work.
How to serve it
Wash the courgette and slice it into pieces or halve it lengthways so hens can peck at the flesh directly — whole courgettes left in a run also double as a simple form of enrichment, giving the flock something to work at over the course of a day.
There is no need to cook it, though lightly cooked courgette is just as safe and some keepers find hens take to it more readily that way. Avoid seasoning, oil or butter — plain courgette is what you want, exactly as you would serve any other vegetable to poultry.
When to hold off
Never offer courgette that is mouldy, slimy or clearly past its best — mould on any vegetable can be harmful to poultry, and it is safer to discard questionable produce than to risk it. Remove any uneaten pieces at the end of the day rather than leaving them to spoil in the run.
If a hen seems off-colour, is eating less than usual, or you notice a change in droppings after introducing a new treat, stop offering it and keep an eye on her. Ongoing symptoms in poultry are worth discussing with a vet experienced in treating chickens, since general small-animal practices do not always see them.
What else to feed
A proper layer feed should remain the bulk of the diet for laying hens, since it is balanced for the calcium and protein a hen needs to keep laying well. Courgette and other vegetable scraps sit alongside that as variety and enrichment rather than a substitute for it.
Poultry-specific treats and grain mixes are a convenient way to add variety without upsetting the balance of the main feed, and a sturdy drinker and feeder make it easier to keep both fresh feed and clean water available throughout the day.
