Why price per kilogram matters more than the sticker price
A larger bag or a multipack of pouches often looks more expensive at first glance than a small one, but working out the true cost per kilogram or per pouch usually tells a different story. It is the only fair way to compare two different pack sizes, or two different brands entirely, rather than judging on the headline price alone.
This matters more for cat food than it might seem, since portion sizes and recommended daily amounts vary quite a bit between recipes. A food that looks cheaper per kilo can still cost more per day to feed if your cat needs a larger daily portion of it to get the same nutrition.
What actually makes cat food good value
The cheapest food per kilogram is not automatically the best value if your cat eats less of a better-quality food to feel satisfied, or if a poor-quality diet leads to more vet visits down the line. Value is a combination of price, how well your cat does on it, and how much of it you actually get through before it needs replacing.

What we can say honestly is that comparing like-for-like on price per kilogram, alongside checking the ingredients list, is the most reliable way to judge value for yourself.

- Usually, but not always, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. It also only represents good value if you can use the food before it goes past its best, since an opened bag does not stay fresh indefinitely.

- Not necessarily. A slightly more expensive food that your cat eats happily and does well on, in smaller daily portions, can work out similar in cost while being a better nutritional choice than the absolute cheapest option on the shelf.
