Buying cat food in bigger bags

We sell to pet owners, not trade — there's no separate account or minimum order, just the same bags of cat food any customer can buy. Buying a bigger bag usually brings the price per kilo down, though we're not going to claim it's the cheapest anywhere. Dry cat food tops out at a smaller size than dog food in most ranges, because most cats simply don't get through it fast enough to make a huge bag worthwhile — so the real question is usually which size is genuinely better value for one cat, not whether to go as big as possible.

Why a bigger bag of cat food is usually cheaper per kilo

The same packaging economics apply to cat food as anything else sold in bags: printing, sealing and boxing a small pouch costs roughly the same as doing it for a large one, and that cost is spread over far fewer kilos in the small bag. A 4kg bag of a dry recipe will typically beat the equivalent 1.5kg bag on price per kilo, sometimes by a wide margin.

Cat food ranges rarely go as large as dog food does, and there's a reason for that beyond packaging — most households have one or two cats eating comparatively small amounts each day, so the market for a huge bag is smaller and fewer brands bother making one.

How big dry cat food bags actually get

Most of our dry cat food range runs from small trial bags up to somewhere between 2kg and 4kg, which covers what a single cat gets through in a reasonable time without the food sitting around losing freshness. A handful of ranges go considerably larger, up into double figures, which suits a multi-cat household or anyone happy to buy less often.

Kitten and senior recipes tend to stay at the smaller end of what a range offers, since those life stages usually mean a smaller cat eating a smaller amount rather than a full-grown cat working through food at full pace.

Freshness once a big bag is open

Dry cat food loses its smell and some of its appeal the longer a bag sits open, and cats are often fussier about that than dogs. A single cat working slowly through a 10kg bag over several months is a genuine risk to the food's freshness even though the price per kilo looked like the better deal on the shelf.

Reseal the bag tightly after every use, keep it away from heat and direct light, and decant into an airtight container if the original bag doesn't close well on its own. For one cat eating modestly, a mid-size bag finished within a month or two is often the more sensible choice than the largest bag available, even at a slightly worse price per kilo.

Comparing price per kilo, and which ranges go bigger

As with any pack size comparison, divide the price by the weight on the exact recipe you want, at two or three sizes, before deciding which is actually better value — a bigger bag isn't automatically cheaper per kilo on every brand. We carry dry ranges including Go-Cat, Purina One, Iams, Whiskas and James Wellbeloved in sizes that stretch well beyond the smallest bag on the shelf, alongside plenty of ranges that stay smaller by design.

If you've got more than one cat, or a cat with a healthy appetite, a bigger bag is worth comparing properly rather than dismissing on habit. If you've got one modest eater, weigh the saving per kilo against a bag that might still be half full when it starts to smell less appealing to your cat.

Common questions

Is a bigger bag of cat food always cheaper per kilo?
Usually, but check the actual numbers rather than assuming. Divide the price by the weight on two or three sizes of the same recipe — most ranges do get cheaper per kilo as the bag gets bigger, but the gap varies a lot between brands.
Will a big bag of dry food go stale before one cat finishes it?
It can. A single cat eating a modest daily amount can take months to work through a very large bag, and dry food does lose freshness and smell over that time even when sealed properly between uses. A mid-size bag is often the safer choice for one cat on their own.
How should I store an opened bag of cat food?
Keep it somewhere cool and dry, reseal it tightly after every use, and decant it into an airtight container if the bag itself doesn't close well. Cats are often quick to turn their nose up at kibble that's lost its smell, more so than dogs tend to be.
Can I split a big bag of cat food between two cats?
Yes, as long as both cats are meant to eat that recipe — check the bag is suitable for both life stages before doing it. Splitting a bigger bag between two cats is often exactly what makes the larger size worth buying rather than it sitting half full for months.
Can I buy cat food from Giddy Pets in bulk?
Yes — the bigger bags on the site are simply the largest size each brand makes, sold at the same price to every customer. We're a retail shop for pet owners rather than a business account setup, so there's no separate pricing tier to unlock a larger bag.
