Can tortoises eat spinach?
Spinach is not poisonous to tortoises, but it is high in oxalates, which bind calcium and make it unavailable. On an animal whose whole diet is built around getting enough calcium, that makes spinach a poor regular choice — feed it rarely if at all, and use better greens instead.
The oxalate problem
Oxalates bind to calcium in the gut and form compounds the animal cannot absorb. The calcium is present in the food and simply passes through unused.
For most animals that is a minor inefficiency. For a tortoise it works directly against the thing that matters most, because inadequate calcium leads to metabolic bone disease and shell deformity — problems that do not reverse.
The occasional leaf in a varied mix is not going to cause harm. Spinach as a staple, or a bowl of supermarket salad leaves built around it, is a genuine mistake.
What to feed instead
Safe weeds are the answer, and they are free: dandelion, plantain, clover, sow thistle, hawkbit and bramble leaves are all commonly recommended. Pick from ground that has not been treated and away from roadsides and dog-walking routes.
Where you are buying greens, watercress, rocket and dark leafy brassica leaves are more useful than spinach. Iceberg lettuce is nearly all water and provides very little.
Variety matters as much as any single choice. A tortoise fed six different plants across a week is better off than one fed the single "best" plant every day.
The thing that matters more than any single food
A tortoise diet is judged on the whole week, not the individual item. High fibre, low protein, plenty of calcium, and variety across many plants is the shape to aim for — mostly weeds and leaves rather than shop-bought produce.
Correct UVB lighting and calcium supplementation are as important as the food. Without UVB a tortoise cannot use the calcium it eats, and shell and bone problems follow however careful the diet is.
Species differ genuinely. Mediterranean tortoises, leopard and sulcata tortoises, and forest species such as red-foots do not all eat the same way. Identify yours and feed for it.
