Small animal cage accessories
A cage accessory aisle covers everything that goes inside the enclosure once you've bought the cage itself: water bottles and bowls, hideaways and tunnels, chew and enrichment toys, and exercise kit. What you need depends on the animal and how much space they have, not just what fits the cage.
What lives in this aisle
Water delivery is the obvious one — a gravity bottle clipped to the bars, or a heavier ceramic bowl that sits on the floor and can't be knocked over. Both work; which suits your animal is partly habit and partly the individual, since some rabbits and guinea pigs simply won't drink properly from a bottle.
Beyond water, this is where hideaways, tunnels, chew blocks and exercise accessories sit. Prey animals like rabbits and guinea pigs want somewhere to retreat out of sight, hamsters and rats want things to gnaw on to keep their teeth worn down, and most small pets benefit from something to climb through or explore rather than a bare floor.
Matching the accessory to the animal
A hamster wheel needs to be the right diameter for the breed — too small and a Syrian hamster arches its back running, which is worth avoiding rather than correcting later. Guinea pigs and rabbits, on the other hand, don't use exercise wheels safely at all; their exercise need is floor space and time out of the cage, not a wheel.
Chew needs differ too: rabbit and guinea pig teeth grow constantly and need constant wearing down through hay and safe chew blocks, while a hamster or rat chews more for enrichment than dental necessity. A hideaway sized for a hamster will feel exposed rather than safe to a guinea pig, so check the size guide rather than assuming one size does the job for every animal in the same cage aisle.
Keeping accessories clean
Water bottle nozzles clog more often than owners expect, so it's worth checking the ball at the tip moves freely every couple of days rather than assuming the bottle is delivering water just because it's full. A bottle that looks fine from the outside can sit blocked for days.
Fabric hideaways and tunnels need washing on the same rota as bedding, since they pick up urine and food debris fast in a small enclosure. Wooden chew toys and hideaways wear down and splinter with use, which is normal, but replace them once the edges look sharp rather than rounded.

Common questions
- Should I use a water bottle or a bowl?
- Either works, but a bottle stays cleaner for longer since nothing can be trodden in it or tipped over, while a bowl is easier for some animals to drink from naturally. Many owners offer both and see which one their animal actually uses.
- How often should I replace chew toys?
- Replace a chew toy once it's worn down to sharp edges or small enough to be a swallowing risk, rather than on a fixed schedule. Wood and cardboard chews are meant to be used up, so disappearing isn't a fault.
- Do rabbits and guinea pigs need a hideaway even in a big cage?
- Yes — both are prey animals and want somewhere to retreat out of sight even when they have plenty of floor space. A hideaway reduces stress noticeably compared with a cage that's all open floor.
- Are exercise balls safe for hamsters?
- Used briefly and supervised, most hamsters tolerate them, but they're not a substitute for time out in a safe, enclosed space, and a hamster can overheat or get trodden on if left in a ball unsupervised for too long. Guinea pigs and rabbits should not be put in exercise balls at all.
