Puppy Training Pads

Used well, a puppy pad gives a clear “go here” spot while a young pup’s bladder catches up — and washable versions cut the waste. Used badly, they confuse house-training, so the technique matters as much as the pad.

How to use puppy pads without slowing training

Pick one consistent spot and place the pad there every time, away from food and bed. Take your puppy to it after waking, eating and play, and reward the instant they go on it. The aim is to gradually move the pad towards the door and then outside, so it becomes a stepping stone to outdoor toileting rather than a permanent indoor toilet.

Accidents are part of the process — clean them with an enzymatic cleaner (not bleach or ammonia, which smell like wee to a dog and draw them back to the spot).

Disposable or washable?

Disposable pads with a leak-proof backing are convenient and great for the early weeks or travel. Washable, reusable mats cost more upfront but pay for themselves, cut landfill waste, and tend to lie flatter so they’re harder for a puppy to scrunch up and shred.

Pads also earn their keep well beyond puppyhood — for overnight cover, crate-lining, senior dogs with weaker bladders and dogs recovering from surgery.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Do puppy pads delay toilet training?

They can if used as a permanent indoor toilet. Used as a stepping stone — one fixed spot, gradually moved towards and then outside the door — they support training rather than slow it.

Disposable or washable puppy pads — which is better?

Disposables are convenient for the early weeks and travel; washable mats cost less over time, create less waste and resist shredding. Many owners use disposables first, then switch to washable.

How do I stop my puppy chewing the pad?

Use a pad holder or tray to pin it down, supervise closely, and redirect to a chew toy. A flatter washable mat is harder to grab than a loose disposable.
