Winalot has been on British shelves since 1927 and this is the plain dry chicken version of it: a complete adult food, cheap to feed, and about as familiar as dog food gets. Purina publish the whole label for it, which is more than many budget brands manage.

The composition reads Cereals, Meat and Animal Derivatives (of which 4% Chicken), Animal Fats, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin (of which 2% Dried Beet Pulp), Vegetable Protein Extracts, Minerals. The panel is Protein 19.0%, Fat 9.0%, Crude Ash 7.0%, Fibre 3.0%. The vitamin and mineral declaration is full, including Vitamin A at 17000 IU/kg and zinc at 100mg/kg, and the feeding table is published rather than hidden on the bag.

Cereals come first on the label and the chicken is 4%. That is what "Meat and Animal Derivatives (of which 4% Chicken)" means: chicken is named because a little of it is there, and the rest of the meat content is unnamed derivative. It is legal, it is normal at this price, and plenty of dogs live long lives on it. But if you have been choosing it because the bag says chicken, this is the number to know. A food that leads with a named meat and tells you which animal it came from will cost more and will read very differently on the label.

How much chicken is actually in it?

4%. The label reads "Meat and Animal Derivatives (of which 4% Chicken)", so chicken is the named part of a larger unnamed meat fraction. Cereals are the first ingredient.

How much do I feed?

Purina publish the table: 1 to 5kg dogs take 40 to 120g a day, 5 to 10kg take 120 to 185g, 10 to 25kg take 185 to 345g, 25 to 45kg take 345 to 510g and 45 to 70kg take 510 to 690g. Those are averages for moderately active dogs at normal temperatures.

Is it a complete food?

Yes. Purina describe it as 100% complete and balanced, so it needs nothing added to it.

How do I switch my dog onto it?

The label says to introduce it gradually over 7 days. That is good advice for any change of food and particularly for a change between very different recipes.

Does it declare calcium and phosphorus?

No. The published panel gives protein, fat, crude ash and fibre only. If you need mineral figures, for a growing large breed or a dog with a kidney concern, this label will not give them to you and you would be better with a food that does.
