A pet scratching at one ear more than the other, or shaking its head repeatedly, is one of those signs owners notice quickly but often try to manage themselves before booking a vet appointment — ear mites being one of the more common, and more treatable, causes.

This is a dropper bottle containing natural Pyrethrum, along with Pyrethrum Extract and Piperonyl Butoxide, formulated specifically to kill ear mites. Johnson's also say it softens wax, soothes irritation and assists healing as part of that process, rather than being a general-purpose ear cleaner. It's for dogs and cats, and comes as a 15ml bottle.

On telling mites from an infection. This is aimed at ear mites specifically, not general ear cleaning or an infection — Johnson's don't give guidance on how many drops or how often, so follow the bottle's own instructions, and an ear that's red, hot, smelly or clearly painful needs a vet rather than a repeat dose of anything bought over the counter.

Who it's for: owners who've noticed a pet scratching at or shaking its head over one ear and suspect mites, wanting a targeted drop rather than a general cleaner.
