A watery or irritated eye is one of the more common small complaints an owner notices day to day, and it is also one of the easier things to make worse by reaching for the wrong product. A soothing drop and a treatment for infection are not the same thing, even if the symptom looks similar at first glance.

Canovel Eye Drops are lubricating and moisturising drops, described by the manufacturer as suitable for animals of all sizes rather than being restricted to one species or weight band. The bottle is a small 10ml size, in keeping with the small doses an eye drop is used in.

• Lubricating and moisturising eye drop
• Suitable for animals of all sizes
• 10ml bottle

What the label does not say. We have not been given a species list, a dosing frequency, or any ingredient information for this product, so we cannot tell you how many drops to use or how often. If the eye is red, swollen, weeping heavily or the animal is pawing at it, that calls for a vet rather than a soothing drop, since an underlying problem will not be fixed by lubrication alone.

Who it's for: owners looking for a general soothing eye drop for everyday dryness or mild irritation, not a treatment for an eye that already looks like a problem.
