A cage floor lined with the right sand does two jobs at once — it makes cleaning out droppings and dropped food quick rather than a scraping job, and it gives birds a source of grit alongside their usual diet.

This is Cage Proud's superfine bird sand with added oyster shell, sold as a 3kg cage-size pack. It suits budgies, canaries, cockatiels, finches and parrots kept in cages or aviaries, and the oyster shell content is there to aid digestion and provide trace elements and minerals alongside the sand itself.

On the specifics. the makers do not give a particle size or confirm whether it is dust-extracted, which matters if respiratory irritation from fine dust is a concern for your birds. The same sand is also made in larger sizes, and this 3kg version is the smallest.

Who it's for: owners of caged or aviary birds who want an easy-clean floor covering that also functions as a grit source, rather than sand alone.
