When is a whippet fully grown?

Whippets typically reach their adult height by around 12 months old, but as a lean, athletic sighthound breed, they continue filling out through the chest and shoulders — the muscling that gives an adult whippet its distinctive shape — until somewhere between 18 and 24 months.

The typical growth pattern

As a smaller sighthound, a whippet's skeletal growth is generally complete earlier than in larger breeds, with growth plates typically closing by around 12 months old. This is why a whippet often looks close to full height well before their first birthday, sometimes leading owners to assume they're fully grown sooner than they actually are.

What continues afterwards is the development of lean muscle across the chest, back and hindquarters, which is what gives an adult whippet its characteristic athletic build. A young whippet that looks lanky or narrow-chested at a year old will typically fill out considerably over the following months.

Weight and build

The UK breed standard gives no fixed weight range for whippets, since the breed is judged on proportion and overall balance rather than a specific number on the scale, and a healthy whippet's weight varies with height and build. A vet or someone experienced with the breed can help judge whether an individual dog's condition looks right.

Because whippets are naturally lean with very little body fat, ribs being easily felt — and often lightly visible — is normal for the breed rather than a sign of being underweight, which can be confusing for anyone used to a stockier breed's body condition.

What this means day to day

Because a whippet's frame is largely set by around a year old but muscle development continues afterwards, many owners gradually build up the intensity of exercise — particularly sprinting and off-lead running — through the dog's second year rather than pushing full exertion from a young age.

Feeding typically shifts from a puppy formula to an adult diet somewhere in this window too, and given how lean the breed naturally runs, a vet or breeder experienced with whippets can advise on portion sizes suited to an individual dog's activity level.

Common questions

How big does a whippet get?
There's no single fixed weight in the breed standard, since whippets are judged on proportion rather than a specific figure, and healthy weight varies with an individual dog's height and build. A vet can help assess whether a particular whippet's condition looks appropriate.
Why is my whippet's ribs showing?
This is normal for the breed — whippets naturally carry very little body fat, and ribs being felt easily, and sometimes lightly visible, is a feature of a healthy whippet rather than a sign they're underweight.
At what age is a whippet considered fully mature?
Most whippets are considered physically mature by around 18 to 24 months, even though their height is usually reached by around a year old. The remaining time is mostly about muscle development rather than further growth.
When should I switch my whippet from puppy to adult food?
This is typically done somewhere around 12 months for a breed this size, though a vet or breeder experienced with whippets can advise on timing for an individual dog. Make the switch gradually over a week or so.
