When is a Dalmatian fully grown?

Most Dalmatians reach their full height by around twelve months old, but they carry on filling out with muscle and general body condition for several months after that, often not looking fully mature until somewhere between eighteen months and two years. As a medium-to-large, athletic breed, a Dalmatian's growth follows a broadly similar pattern to other breeds of a similar size, rather than anything unusual.

Height versus body condition

Height at the shoulder is usually the first thing to stop changing, typically settling somewhere around the one-year mark for most Dalmatians. What continues afterwards is less about getting taller and more about the dog filling out, muscle development, chest depth, and the lean, athletic build the breed is known for tend to keep developing gradually for months after height has levelled off.

This is a normal pattern for a breed this size and shouldn't be confused with a dog being underweight during that in-between stage, a Dalmatian at fourteen or fifteen months can look leaner and less filled-out than they will at two years old, without anything being wrong.

Tracking growth sensibly

Rather than fixating on a specific weight figure, tracking your Dalmatian's body condition, whether you can feel their ribs easily without them being visible, and whether they have a visible waist from above, gives a more useful picture than a number on a scale alone, since individual dogs within a breed vary.

Regular weigh-ins during a vet visit are a good way to build a general picture over time, and your vet is best placed to say whether your individual dog's growth looks on track, given their specific build and any breed-related concerns.

Common questions

How big does a fully grown Dalmatian get?
Dalmatians are a medium-to-large athletic breed, with males typically a little larger than females. Individual dogs vary, and your vet can advise whether your dog's size looks appropriate for them.
At what age do Dalmatians stop growing?
Most reach their adult height by around twelve months, though they continue to fill out with muscle and body condition until closer to eighteen months to two years old. Growth plates typically close around the one-year mark in a breed this size.
Should a Dalmatian puppy be on puppy food until fully grown?
Generally yes, a puppy formula suited to their expected adult size supports steady growth, and most owners move to an adult recipe once a vet confirms the dog has reached maturity, usually somewhere around twelve to eighteen months.
Is it normal for a young Dalmatian to look lanky?
Yes, it's a common stage for the breed and many similarly built dogs, height often arrives before the muscle and body condition that fills a dog out, so a lean, gangly look in the middle teenage months is usually nothing to worry about.
