When is a Bichon Frise fully grown?

Most Bichon Frises reach their adult height by around nine to ten months old, though it commonly takes closer to a year to twelve months for the body to fill out and the coat to reach its full, dense adult texture. As with any small breed, growth plates close relatively early compared with a large or giant breed, which is why the size milestone comes sooner.

The typical growth timeline

A Bichon Frise puppy grows quickly in the first six months, gaining most of its adult height in that window before growth slows noticeably. Between roughly nine and twelve months, height gain has generally stopped, though many Bichons continue to fill out in muscle and body condition for a few months beyond that.

The coat is often the last thing to catch up. A Bichon's soft puppy coat gradually gives way to the denser, curlier adult texture over the first year or so, and some dogs are not fully in adult coat until well past their first birthday.

Why small breeds finish growing sooner

Growth plates — the areas of developing cartilage at the ends of a young dog's bones — close earlier in small breeds than in large ones, which is the underlying reason a Bichon reaches its adult size within the first year while a large-breed dog can still be growing well into its second.

This is also why puppy food formulated for small breeds is built differently to a large-breed formula — it reflects a faster growth window and a smaller adult size, rather than assuming every puppy grows on the same schedule.

Common questions

At what age should I switch my Bichon Frise from puppy to adult food?
Most small breeds, Bichon Frise included, are ready to move onto adult food from around nine to twelve months, once height gain has largely stopped. Check the specific food's guidance and make the switch gradually over a week or so.
Is it normal for a Bichon Frise's coat to change as it matures?
Yes, a soft puppy coat typically gives way to a denser, curlier adult coat over the first year, and grooming needs generally increase once the adult coat comes through fully.
How much should a fully grown Bichon Frise weigh?
Most adult Bichon Frises settle in a modest weight range typical of a small breed, though the right weight for an individual dog depends on their frame and build. A vet or vet nurse can assess whether your dog's weight and body condition look right for them.
