What do rats eat?

Pet rats are genuine omnivores and among the easier small pets to feed well, doing best on a commercial rat mix or formulated block food as the everyday staple, with small amounts of fresh fruit, vegetables and occasional protein added for variety.

A good everyday diet

A rat-specific mix or a formulated block food gives a balanced base, and many owners find block food useful because it stops rats picking out favourite bits and leaving the rest, which can happen with a loose mix of seeds, grains and pellets. Either approach works well as long as the whole ration is being eaten rather than just the tastiest pieces.

Rats are sociable, intelligent animals and tend to do best kept in pairs or small groups, which is worth bearing in mind alongside diet — a rat's overall wellbeing depends on more than just what is in the bowl.

Fresh food and occasional protein

Small amounts of fruit and vegetables — carrot, broccoli, apple and banana are all popular — make a good addition a few times a week, offered in pieces a rat can manage easily. A small amount of plain cooked egg, chicken or a similar protein source can be given occasionally too, and most rats enjoy the variety.

Raw sweet potato and raw dried beans should be avoided, since both can be harmful to rats unless properly cooked, and citrus fruit is best given only sparingly. Introducing any new food gradually, rather than all at once, is a sensible habit with a rat's digestion.

Water and watching for changes

Fresh water should be available at all times, usually from a bottle attached to the cage, and checked daily to make sure it is flowing properly. Rats are generally hardy, but a bottle that has stopped working can go unnoticed for longer than it should.

A rat that stops eating, loses weight, or develops laboured or noisy breathing should be seen by a vet, since respiratory problems are relatively common in pet rats and are worth catching early. Any sudden change in appetite or behaviour is worth having checked rather than waiting.

Common questions

Should I feed my rat a mix or block food?
Both work well. Block food has the advantage of stopping a rat picking out favourite pieces and leaving the rest, which can happen with a loose seed and grain mix, but either is fine as long as the whole ration gets eaten.
What fruit and vegetables can rats eat?
Carrot, broccoli, apple and banana are all popular choices a few times a week, offered in manageable pieces. Citrus fruit is best given only sparingly, and raw sweet potato or raw dried beans should be avoided.
Can rats eat meat or egg?
Yes, a small amount of plain cooked egg or chicken occasionally is fine and most rats enjoy it, since they are genuine omnivores. This should stay an occasional addition rather than a daily habit.
Do pet rats need to be kept in pairs?
Rats are sociable animals and generally do best kept in pairs or small groups rather than alone, which matters for their overall wellbeing alongside a good diet.
Why is my rat breathing noisily?
Respiratory problems are relatively common in pet rats and are worth having checked by a vet promptly, especially if breathing sounds laboured or is paired with reduced appetite or activity.
