What do hamsters eat?

A hamster eats a complete hamster mix or pellet as its base, with small amounts of suitable fresh food a few times a week. The complication is hoarding: hamsters stuff food into their cheek pouches and bury it around the cage, so an empty bowl does not mean a hungry hamster.

The daily amount

One to two tablespoons of a complete hamster mix a day suits most adult Syrians, with dwarf hamsters generally needing a little less. Offering it in the evening fits their natural rhythm, since hamsters are most active at night.

A complete pellet avoids the selective feeding that mixes allow, though many hamsters find mixes more interesting. If you use a mix, it is worth checking that the less appealing components are actually being eaten rather than pushed aside.

Hoarding, and how to read the cage

Hamsters instinctively cache food. A bowl emptied within an hour usually means the food has been moved rather than eaten, so judging appetite from the bowl alone is unreliable.

It is worth checking the hoard occasionally and clearing out anything fresh that has been buried, since damp food in a warm cage spoils quickly. Leave the dry hoard alone though, as removing it entirely tends to stress the animal.

Fresh food and treats

Small pieces of broccoli, carrot, cucumber, apple or a little cooked egg are all commonly offered a few times a week. Portions should be genuinely small, roughly the size of the hamster's paw, and anything uneaten taken out the same day.

Sugary treats, citrus, onion, garlic and chocolate are all best avoided, and sticky honey-based treats tend to cause more problems than they are worth.

Common questions

Why is my hamster's bowl always empty?
Almost always hoarding rather than hunger. Hamsters carry food in their cheek pouches and bury it in their bedding, so the bowl empties long before the food is eaten. Judge condition by the hamster rather than the bowl.
How often should I feed a hamster?
Once a day is normally enough, ideally in the evening. A measured daily amount works better than continually topping up, because topping up makes it impossible to tell how much is actually being consumed.
Can hamsters eat vegetables every day?
Small amounts a few times a week rather than daily. Fresh food is a supplement to a complete mix, not a replacement for it, and too much too quickly causes digestive upset.
Do Syrian and dwarf hamsters eat the same things?
Broadly yes, though dwarf hamsters are smaller and need less, and some dwarf species are prone to diabetes, so sugary foods and fruit are worth being more careful with.
