What do ferrets eat?

A ferret is an obligate carnivore. It needs a diet high in animal protein and fat and very low in fibre and carbohydrate, and it genuinely cannot digest plant material. Almost everything that suits a rabbit or a hamster is wrong for a ferret, which is why they need feeding advice of their own.

What a ferret actually needs

A complete ferret food is the straightforward option, and the thing to look at is the protein and fat content and the source of that protein. Guidance generally points to a high proportion of animal protein with a meaningful fat content, and as little grain or vegetable filler as possible.

Ferrets have a very short gut and food passes through in a few hours, so they eat little and often rather than in set meals. Food is usually left available rather than portioned.

Why plant matter is the problem

Ferrets lack the ability to digest fibre and plant carbohydrate, so vegetables, fruit and grain pass through largely unused and can cause digestive problems. Sugary treats are particularly worth avoiding, and have been linked to insulinoma, which is common in pet ferrets.

This is also why many general small pet products are unsuitable. A treat formulated for a rabbit or a hamster is built around exactly the ingredients a ferret cannot use.

Cat food, and other common shortcuts

A high quality kitten food is sometimes used as a stopgap because it is high in protein, but most adult cat foods are not an adequate long-term diet for a ferret. Dog food is not suitable at all.

Fresh water must always be available. Ferrets on a dry diet drink a fair amount, and a bowl is usually preferred to a bottle because they can drink faster from it.

Common questions

Can ferrets eat fruit and vegetables?
They should not. Ferrets cannot digest plant matter and sugary foods in particular are associated with insulinoma, which is common in the species. Meat-based foods and treats are the right choice.
Can I feed my ferret cat food?
A high quality kitten food can work as a short-term stopgap because of its protein level, but most adult cat foods contain too much plant material to suit a ferret long term. A complete ferret food is the better answer.
How often do ferrets eat?
Little and often. Their gut transit time is only a few hours, so food is normally left available rather than given as set meals, and a ferret will typically eat many small amounts through the day.
What treats are suitable for a ferret?
Meat-based ones. Small pieces of cooked meat or a meat-based ferret treat suit them; anything sweet, fruity or grain-based does not.
