Staffy puppy growth chart

A Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy grows quickly in the first six months, reaching roughly two-thirds of their adult weight by then, before growth slows through the rest of the first year. Most Staffies stop growing in height by around 12 months but continue filling out in muscle and chest depth until closer to 18 months old, so a one-year-old Staffy can still visibly change shape over the following months.

Typical growth pattern

Adult male Staffies generally weigh somewhere around 13 to 17 kilograms and adult females around 11 to 15 kilograms, though individual dogs vary with frame and condition. Growth is fastest in the first few months of life, tailing off through adolescence rather than continuing at the same rate throughout the first year.

A puppy that seems to plateau earlier than a chart suggests, or grows faster, is not automatically a problem. Consistency of steady gain and a good body condition matter more than matching an average figure exactly for their age.

Feeding through the growth phase

A medium breed puppy formula with a feeding guide by current weight, moving to adult food once growth has clearly levelled off, generally suits this breed well. Staffies are muscular, food-motivated dogs, and it is worth watching body condition through adolescence since they can put on weight readily once growth slows but appetite has not.

Regular weigh-ins, either at home or at the vet, give a clearer picture of whether your puppy is tracking steadily than a single comparison against an average chart.

Weight through adolescence

Staffies can pack on weight quickly once growth slows in the second half of the first year, particularly if the amount fed has not been adjusted down from the puppy stage. Checking body condition monthly through this period, rather than relying on the same daily amount that suited a faster-growing younger puppy, helps avoid an overweight young adult.

A muscular, athletic build is typical and healthy for the breed; a visible roll of fat around the middle or a lack of any waist from above are the signs worth acting on with a portion review rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.

Common questions

When do Staffies stop growing?
Most reach their adult height by around 12 months, but continue to fill out through the chest and shoulders until roughly 18 months old. A Staffy can look noticeably more mature and muscular at two years old than they did at one.
How much should a Staffy puppy weigh at 6 months?
Very roughly, around two-thirds of their eventual adult weight, though this varies a good deal between individual dogs. A steady upward trend matters more than matching a specific number at a specific age.
Is my Staffy puppy underweight?
If ribs are easily felt without visible bones, energy and appetite are normal, and weight is climbing steadily, that is generally a good sign regardless of how it compares to an average chart. A vet check is the right way to settle any real concern.
