Shih Tzu weight chart: what a healthy weight looks like

A healthy adult Shih Tzu typically weighs somewhere between about 4kg and 7.5kg, a fairly compact range for the breed, though where an individual dog sits within it depends on their particular build and bone structure. Most reach close to their adult weight by around ten to twelve months, a little later than some small breeds because Shih Tzus tend to fill out gradually rather than in one quick growth spurt.

How growth typically progresses

A Shih Tzu puppy grows quickly in the first few months and then more gradually as they approach their first birthday. Because the breed is compact and sturdy rather than lean, a healthy Shih Tzu often looks and feels more solid than a leggier small breed of a similar weight.

Regular weigh-ins with your vet through puppyhood are more useful than any single chart, since they show your own dog's trend over time rather than comparing them to an average that may or may not reflect their particular build.

Why their build is worth knowing about

Shih Tzus are a brachycephalic, or flat-faced, breed, and that shape affects more than just their appearance — it can make exercise tolerance and heat management harder work than for a longer-nosed dog, which is worth bearing in mind alongside weight when thinking about your dog's overall condition. A Shih Tzu carrying extra weight on top of an already flat-faced structure has a harder time of both.

Because of this, body condition — being able to feel the ribs without pressing hard, and seeing a visible waist — matters at least as much as the number on the scales for this breed. If you are ever unsure how your dog is doing, a vet check is a better answer than working it out from a chart.

Common questions

What is a healthy weight for an adult Shih Tzu?
Most healthy adult Shih Tzus weigh somewhere between around 4kg and 7.5kg, though the exact figure depends on the individual dog's build. Body condition — how easily you can feel the ribs and whether there is a visible waist — is a better everyday check than the number alone.
At what age is a Shih Tzu fully grown?
Most reach close to their adult weight by around ten to twelve months old, a little later than some small breeds since Shih Tzus tend to fill out gradually. Your vet can tell you if your puppy's growth looks on track.
Why does my Shih Tzu's flat face matter for their weight?
Being a flat-faced, or brachycephalic, breed already makes exercise and heat management harder work for a Shih Tzu, and carrying extra weight compounds both of those. Keeping a Shih Tzu at a healthy weight matters more for this breed than for a longer-nosed dog of a similar size.
