How much should a Cavapoo weigh?
Most adult Cavapoos weigh somewhere in the range of roughly 5.5kg to 11kg (about 12 to 24lb), but because a Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle of varying size, there's no single fixed weight the way there is for a purebred dog with a breed standard. Which Poodle size was used in the cross — toy, miniature or standard — makes a real difference to where an individual dog lands.
Popular with Cavapoo owners: dog grooming brushes, teeth-cleaning chews for dogs and long-lasting natural chews.
Why the range is so wide
A Cavapoo bred from a toy Poodle tends to stay on the smaller end of the range, while one bred from a miniature Poodle, which is more common, typically ends up a bit larger. Generation also plays a part — a first-generation cross can vary more than a multi-generation Cavapoo bred from parents that are themselves more consistent in size.
This is exactly why a fixed number isn't that useful for judging your own dog. A healthy Cavapoo at 6kg and a healthy Cavapoo at 10kg can both be exactly the right weight for their individual frame.
A better way to judge than the scale alone
Body condition scoring — feeling for ribs without needing to press hard, and looking for a visible waist from above and a slight tuck from the side — is a more reliable everyday check than comparing your dog's weight to a general range. A vet will do exactly this at a routine check-up and can tell you where your individual dog sits.
Weigh-ins over time are useful for spotting a trend rather than judging a single number. A dog steadily gaining or losing without an obvious reason — a diet change, more or less exercise — is worth mentioning at their next vet visit.
Tracking growth as a puppy
A Cavapoo puppy gains weight quickly in the first few months, and growth tends to level off as they approach their adult size, typically somewhere between nine and twelve months. Rather than comparing your puppy's weight at a given age to a chart built for a fixed breed, ask your vet to plot their growth at routine check-ups and flag anything that looks like it's tracking unusually fast or slow.
Overfeeding a puppy to try to hit a particular number isn't a good idea — rapid, forced growth is linked to joint problems later in life in dogs generally, so a steady, appropriate rate matters far more than reaching any specific weight on a schedule.
Common questions
- At what age is a Cavapoo fully grown?
- Most Cavapoos reach their adult size somewhere between nine and twelve months, though it can take a little longer for dogs on the larger end of the range. Growth generally slows noticeably well before that point.
- Is my Cavapoo overweight?
- Rather than comparing to a general weight range, check body condition — you should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard, with a visible waist. Your vet can give you a proper assessment and advise on portions if needed.
- Do toy Poodle-cross Cavapoos stay smaller as adults?
- Generally yes — a Cavapoo bred from a toy Poodle tends to land on the smaller end of the typical weight range compared with one bred from a miniature Poodle, though individual dogs still vary.
