How big will my Rottweiler get?

An adult Rottweiler typically weighs somewhere between 35kg and 60kg, with males usually sitting toward the heavier end of that range and standing taller than females at the shoulder. Most Rottweilers reach close to their full height within the first year but continue filling out in chest depth and muscle for a good while longer, often not looking fully mature until 18 months to two years old.

What determines how big a Rottweiler ends up

Genetics from both parents is the biggest single factor, so a breeder who can show you the size of a puppy's parents, and ideally earlier litters from the same line, can usually give a more useful estimate than a generic breed average. Sex also matters, with males generally larger and heavier-boned than females.

Diet and general health through the puppy months play a role too. A Rottweiler puppy who's unwell or underfed for a stretch can fall behind their genetic potential and may take time to catch back up once things are resolved, though a single dip is rarely a lasting problem on its own.

Why growth rate matters for a breed this size

As a large, heavy-boned breed, Rottweilers are generally advised to grow at a controlled, steady rate rather than as quickly as possible, since rapid growth during puppyhood puts extra strain on developing joints and bones while they're carrying an increasing amount of weight. This is part of why large breed puppy foods, with a different calorie and calcium balance to standard formulas, exist as their own category.

Growth plates in a breed this size also close later than they would in a small dog, which is one reason vets often advise some caution with high-impact exercise and repeated jumping until a young Rottweiler is more physically mature.

Tracking your own dog rather than a fixed number

A weight chart shows an average range across many dogs, not a target for your specific puppy, so tracking your Rottweiler's own trend over time and checking their body condition — feeling their ribs without heavy pressure, a visible waist from above — tells you more than comparing a single reading against the chart.

If your Rottweiler's growth looks unusually fast, unusually slow, or they develop any change in how they move during this period, a vet can assess them properly and flag anything that needs a closer look.

Common questions

At what age is a Rottweiler considered fully grown?
Most reach close to their adult height by around 12-18 months but continue developing chest depth and muscle mass for longer, often not looking fully mature until 18 months to two years old.
Are male Rottweilers bigger than females?
Generally yes, males tend to be both taller at the shoulder and heavier in build than females, though there's a normal range either side of that and some individual variation within each sex.
Does a Rottweiler puppy's paw size predict their adult size?
Large paws relative to their current body size are often mentioned as an informal sign a puppy has more growing to do, but it isn't a precise or reliable prediction. A vet or experienced breeder familiar with the litter's parents can usually give a more informed estimate.
Should I be worried if my Rottweiler puppy is growing very fast?
Very rapid growth is worth mentioning to a vet, since large breed puppies are generally advised to grow at a steady, controlled rate rather than the fastest possible pace, given the extra strain quick growth can put on developing joints.
