Dogue de Bordeaux weight chart: how to read it

A Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the heaviest-built molosser breeds relative to its height, and a fully grown adult commonly weighs anywhere from around 50kg to 65kg or more, with males generally at the top end of that range. As with most giant breeds, the chart figure is a reference range rather than a fixed target to aim for.

Why this breed's range is so wide

The Dogue de Bordeaux is built to be exceptionally muscular and dense for its height rather than tall, which means weight alone tells you less about this breed than it does about a more typically proportioned dog. Two Dogues of similar height can have a considerable difference in healthy weight depending on bone density and muscle mass.

Growth is also slow and prolonged compared with smaller breeds, and this breed is not usually considered fully physically mature until somewhere around 18 months to two years old, so a young adult's weight should be read against that longer timeline rather than compared directly to a fully mature dog's figure.

What to check instead of just the number

Body condition is the more useful measure day to day — you should be able to feel ribs under a light covering of muscle and fat without a heavy layer over them, and see some definition at the waist, though this breed naturally carries a heavier, stockier look than a leaner breed even at a healthy weight.

Given how much strain excess weight puts on a large, heavy-boned breed's joints, staying towards a lean end of healthy is generally more protective for this breed than for a lighter one, and your vet is the right person to confirm where your individual dog sits.

Common questions

How much should a Dogue de Bordeaux weigh?
Most adults weigh somewhere between around 50kg and 65kg or more, with males typically at the heavier end. The wide range reflects real variation in bone density and muscle mass within the breed, so treat it as a reference rather than a fixed target.
At what age is a Dogue de Bordeaux fully grown?
This giant breed typically continues developing until around 18 months to two years old, later than most medium-sized dogs. Weight recorded before that age should be read against that longer growth timeline.
Is it worse for a Dogue de Bordeaux to carry extra weight than other breeds?
Excess weight puts particular strain on this breed's large joints and heavy frame, so keeping a lean, healthy body condition matters more here than for a lighter, smaller breed. Your vet can help confirm where your dog's weight should sit.
