Are American Water Spaniels hypoallergenic?
No dog breed is truly hypoallergenic, and that is true whatever a breed's coat looks like, including the American Water Spaniel. What the breed does have is a dense, curly, water-repellent coat that sheds moderately rather than heavily, which some allergy sufferers find easier to live with than a breed that sheds constantly — but it is not a guarantee.
Why 'hypoallergenic' is not quite the right word
Dog allergies are triggered mainly by proteins found in dander, saliva and urine, not simply by loose hair. A breed can shed very little and still produce plenty of the allergen that actually causes a reaction, which is why no breed, including low-shedding ones, can be called genuinely hypoallergenic.
What varies between breeds is how much of that allergen ends up circulating around the home, and shedding is one factor in that rather than the whole story. A breed that sheds less tends to spread less hair-borne allergen into carpets, sofas and the air, which is often what people mean when they call a breed "better for allergies".
The American Water Spaniel's coat
The breed carries a dense, curly to wavy double coat that developed to repel water and cold while retrieving, similar in principle to a Poodle's or Curly-Coated Retriever's coat. It sheds moderately and fairly consistently through the year, rather than blowing its coat heavily in two big seasonal moults the way many double-coated breeds do.
That curly coat needs regular brushing to stop it matting, particularly behind the ears and around the legs, and many owners find a few sessions a week manageable rather than daily grooming being essential.
If allergies are a real concern
If someone in the household has a diagnosed dog allergy, spending real time around an individual American Water Spaniel before committing is far more useful than relying on the breed's general reputation, since sensitivity to specific dogs genuinely varies between allergic individuals.
Regular grooming and bathing can help reduce the amount of loose hair and dander circulating in the home, alongside good general house cleaning, though neither removes the allergen source entirely for someone who reacts strongly.

The American Water Spaniel was developed in the American Midwest as a versatile retrieving dog, working from small boats in cold water, which is exactly what shaped its dense, curly, oily-feeling coat. That working background is worth knowing because it explains why the coat behaves the way it does rather than being an arbitrary style choice.
The natural oils in the coat that repel water can also mean a slightly stronger 'doggy' smell between baths compared with some other breeds, which is a separate consideration from allergies but worth knowing before committing to the breed if you are sensitive to it.
