Dog Nappies & Incontinence Pads
A dog nappy is a short-term tool for a specific job — a bitch in season, a dog recovering from surgery, a house guest who marks, or an older dog whose bladder has started to let go. Choose by the job first: a female nappy with a tail hole for seasons, a belly band for a male who marks, and a washable wrap or bed pad where it is going to be every day.

Which one for which job
| The situation | What to use | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Bitch in season | Disposable female nappy with a tail hole | Change every 3–4 hours; a season runs 2–3 weeks so buy by the pack |
| Male dog marking indoors | Belly band (wrap) with an absorbent liner | Wraps the sheath only, so it goes on in seconds and does not need a tail hole |
| Older dog leaking at night | Washable wrap or nappy plus a waterproof bed pad | Get the leak checked by a vet first — incontinence in older dogs is often treatable |
| After spaying or surgery | Soft disposable nappy, changed often | Keep it loose over stitches and let the skin air between changes |
| Travel or a house guest | Disposables | Cheapest for a few days; washables pay back after about a fortnight |
Measure the waist, not the weight
Nappy sizes are set by the waist measured just in front of the back legs, and two dogs of the same weight can be a size apart. Measure with a soft tape, snug but not tight, and buy the size whose range has that number in the middle rather than at the edge. If a dog is between sizes, go up: a nappy that is too tight rubs and a dog will get it off, while a slightly loose one still works with the tabs pulled firm.
Female nappies need a tail hole; belly bands for males wrap the middle of the body and do not. A male dog with full incontinence rather than marking needs a proper nappy, not a band, because a band only covers the sheath.
Disposable or washable
Disposables are the right answer for a season, a recovery or a weekend away: they are absorbent, they go in the bin, and nobody has to rinse anything. For an older dog who will wear something every day, a washable wrap with a replaceable liner costs less within a couple of weeks and is softer against skin that is going to be covered for months.
Whichever you use, change it as soon as it is wet. Urine held against the skin causes scald quickly, particularly on a dog with a thin coat, and the smell that puts people off nappies is almost always a nappy left on too long rather than the nappy itself.
Protect the bed, not just the dog
A washable, waterproof-backed bed pad under an older dog does two things a nappy cannot: it catches what a nappy misses and it saves the bed. Two pads means one is always on the bed while the other is in the wash. The same pads work in a crate and on a car seat.
If leaking started suddenly, or the dog is drinking more than usual, see a vet before you stock up. Urinary infections, hormone-related incontinence in spayed bitches and some kidney and diabetic conditions all show up first as a wet bed, and most are treatable.
Keeping a nappy on
Most dogs accept a nappy within a day if it is introduced calmly: put it on, distract with a treat or a short walk, and take it off again before they have thought about it. A dog that keeps removing one is usually wearing the wrong size, or has been left in a wet one. Braces-style suspenders exist for dogs with no waist to speak of, such as whippets and greyhounds.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
What size dog nappy do I need?
Measure the waist just in front of the back legs with a soft tape and match it to the size chart on the product. Buy the size whose range your measurement sits in the middle of, and go up if the dog is between sizes.
How often should a dog nappy be changed?
As soon as it is wet, and at least every 3 to 4 hours while it is on. Urine against the skin causes scald quickly. Let the skin air between changes.
Can a male dog wear a nappy?
Yes. For marking, a belly band that wraps the sheath is enough. For true incontinence a male needs a full nappy, because a band does not cover everything.
Are washable dog nappies better than disposable?
For everyday wear on an older dog, washables are softer and cheaper within a couple of weeks. For a season, a recovery or travel, disposables are simpler and more absorbent.
My older dog has started leaking. Do I just need nappies?
Get it checked first. Incontinence that starts suddenly is often a urinary infection or hormone-related and is usually treatable. A nappy and a waterproof bed pad manage it in the meantime.
