Hot-weather safety
A cooling mat is a comfort aid, not a substitute for shade, fresh water and avoiding walks in peak heat.

When UK dogs actually overheat
Most UK heatstroke cases come from exercise on a warm day rather than from a hot car, so the single most useful thing is to walk early morning and late evening through the summer and skip the middle of the day. Flat-faced dogs, overweight dogs, elderly dogs, thick-coated breeds and puppies all overheat well below the temperature that feels alarming to a person.
Test the pavement with the back of your hand for five seconds. If it is too hot for you to hold it there, it is too hot for a paw.
