Every boarding business needs a licence
In England, anyone boarding dogs or cats for a business must hold a council licence, which comes with a star rating from one to five after an inspection. Ask to see the licence and its rating, or look it up on your council’s public register.
Vaccinations, kennel cough included
Expect to show an up-to-date vaccination record. Most kennels also ask for the kennel cough vaccine, which can need to be given a couple of weeks before the stay, so check the rules when you book rather than the week you leave.
Visit before you book
A good kennel or cattery is happy to show you round. Look at how clean the runs are, whether cats are kept away from the sight and sound of dogs, and how much time each animal actually gets outside its run every day.
