Start with your vet
Hydrotherapy is a treatment, so reputable centres ask for a referral from your vet before the first session. The referral tells the therapist what the dog can and cannot do, which matters most after surgery.
Pool or treadmill?
Swimming takes weight off the joints completely and suits arthritis and weight loss. An underwater treadmill keeps the dog walking with the water taking some of its weight, which is often used to rebuild a normal gait after an operation. Many centres have both and will choose for your dog.
Check whether insurance pays
Many pet insurance policies cover hydrotherapy when a vet refers it for a condition the policy covers. Check your policy before booking a course, because the sessions add up.
